PALMA
PALMA City Council yesterday gave the green light to a crackdown on illegal trading in the capital which is not only providing unfair competition to the legal retail sector, it is also damaging the city's image, the council claims.

The job of carrying out the new campaign has been tasked to the department for Tourism, Commerce and Consumer Affairs which is going to launch an exhaustive inspection of shops in the capital.

The Councilor for Commerce, Joana Maria Borras, said yesterday that the inspections are going to be continual, “not just at certain times of the year”.
A new quality control label is also going to be introduced which will be awarded to retailers who comply with the fair and quality trading requisites.
The inspections are going to launched in the neighbourhoods of Son Gotleu and Pere Garau where “illegal” trading is said to be a serious problem by Palma City Council.
