The accident happened just before 2pm near the Santa Maria exit and the two critical victims were a young girl and a woman.
Emergency services said that the victim was a man in his early 50*s who died at the scene as paramedics battled in vain to save his life.
Traffic police sources said that according to eyewitnesses and initial impressions, the multiple accident was caused when a vehicle travelling in the direction of Palma, crossed the central reservation colliding with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The five victims all had to be cut free from the wreckage of the two cars involved. Some sources claimed that as the vehicle veered across the central reservation it lifted into the air and crashed down on the roof of the other vehicle involved.

Once cut free, a ten-year-old girl and a 45-year-old woman were rushed to intensive care at Son Dureta hospital suffering severe head injuries.
A 12-year-old boy was in the same hospital being treated for minor injuries, a 39-year-old woman was taken to Inca Hospital while a 60-year-old was being treated at the Clínica Rotger.

The accident caused traffic chaos and long tail backs in the direction of Inca as police and the emergency services dealt with the accident and then cleared the debris.

A full investigation was underway last night.
