SOME 29.65 percent of fines in the Balearics carrying loss of points from the driving licence have been imposed for driving without a seat belt.
In total this has claimed 177 points from the licences of those drivers caught.
Balearic Traffic Police sources said yesterday that up to July 5 a total of 199 infractions had taken place, which meant a loss of a total of 657 points. Some 17.59 percent of penalties imposed on the islands were for speeding, which claimed 86 points from those committing this offence, if the fines are confirmed. The number of penalties imposed up to now for driving without a seat belt is 59, and there have been 35 for speeding.
Driving while over the limit for alcohol was responsible for 14.57 percent of penalties up to July 5, a percentage similar to the fines imposed on drivers using mobile phones while at the wheel, which was 14 percent. By gender, 81.9 percent of the offences were committed by men, while young people under 25 committed 12 percent of the infractions. Other infractions committed were illegal overtaking and ignoring traffic priorities, for which six drivers received penalties. Also, twelve motorcyclists were fined for not wearing a crash helmet.
