THE Palma city council announced its Summer Nights programme of open air concerts and films, which this year includes three top films in English.
They are Just Like Heaven starring Reese Witherspoon, Crash, and Monster in Law, with Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez.
Details of the programme, which will run for 47 days, were announced yesterday by councillor Maria José Frau and Bernadí Seguí of the Sa Nostra bank's cultural department. Concerts include Songs of the Mediterranean, held by the lake in the Parc de la Mar every Friday throughout July and August.
This year, musicians -who perform on a platform on the lake -will come from as far afield as Colombia and India.
The films, shown on a giant screen in the park, will include 24 films in all, including the three in English mentioned above.
All the others will be shown in Spanish or Catalan and they include blockbusters such as War of the Worlds.
The concerts cover a wide range of music including jazz, rock and reggae, and will also be held in the Par de la Mar.
Another of the highlights will be the appearance of the groups which take part in the Soller Folk Dance Festival, who will come to Palma on July 20.
There will also be a space for amateur dramatics, with performances by five groups from Palma and one from Felanitx.
The Summer Nights programme started in the summer of 1997.
This year's budget is 276'038 euros, seven per cent more than last year, Frau said.
All the concerts and film shows are free.
