Staff Reporter MAJORCAN Socialist (PSM)General Secretary in Palma, Biel Riera, said yesterday that his party was going to make it a “priority” to rid the city of unacceptable noise pollution.

Riera claimed that people had the right to their health and to be able to rest. He added that he “felt sure” the City Council would adapt local bylaws in line with European Union regulations to protect residents from excess noise and vibration. Riera furthered that noise produced by commercial and industrial activity, and by bars, restaurants and clubs must not ride roughshod over the well-being of people who live nearby. “Such organisations need to think about environmental quality and not just earning money,” he said. Riera pointed out that “many years ago” commercial activity which produced a great deal of noise and effluent left operations in the city where housing had sprung up to move to industrial estates.
