TEN thousand jobs will be lost in the Balearics from next October, according to the autonomous Minister for Employment, Margarita Najera.
The majority of the jobs will be lost in the construction sector.
By the winter, there will be 60'000 out of work in the Balearics.
Najera made her comments during a visit to a shipyard yesterday.
The Government is to develop a series of social projects designed to help 1'000 people who are unable to claim welfare.
Madrid has already approved the awarding of 350 euros a months for 2'000 people out of work. The Balearic Government is to match this for a further 2'000 people. “Despite the rise in the unemployment figures, we're not going to have a dramatic slump, because we have a productive economy based on tourism, which represents 80 percent of the Balearic economy, compared to the 15 percent that the construction sector represents,” said Najera. She added that “though the crisis in this sector is going to do us damage, it's not going to be as bad as is occurring in Valencia or Murcia where all their wealth is based on construction”.
