Palma.— The report on activity of the air and sea rescue organisation in the Balearics was being given in Palma yesterday by Transport General Secretary, Jose Luis Cachafeiro.

Apparently 297 boats were given assistance by Maritime Rescue Services in incidents during 2010 which involved 909 people. The vast majority were related to pleasure craft in Majorcan waters. Cachafeiro, speaking prior to a simulated maritime rescue being staged in the port of Palma, took the opportunity to launch a pleasure boat safety campaign.

He insisted on the importance of those who took part in nautical sports being aware of risks and of the first line of action in case of accident.
Cachafeiro said that 58.8 million euros had been invested in rescue equipment in recent years.
