STAFF REPORTER RESEARCHERS from the University of Granada have helped in the discovery of a new species of insect which lives in the Balearics. Its full name is Tyrrhenoleuctra antoninoi and belongs to a family of insects akin to flies. The group of Spanish and Italian scientists have for a decade been using molecular techniques to identify the characteristics of the insect and have shown that there are three species spread widely around the western Mediterranean. The scientists proved that the type found in the Balearics is a species all of its own publishing details in the scientific journal Zootaxa.
