STAFF REPORTER PEOPLE living in Palma have had enough of excess noise and are joining forces to confront the City Council over bylaws governing noise levels. Residents are angry that legal approval was given in April this year for day-time noise to reach 45 decibels in the city, 10 higher than it had previously been; and up to 30 at night, from its former limit of 25. The neighbourhood associations want it made clear to the Council that the issue of noise is not something to be dismissed lightly. “Excessive levels can be an incisive factor in people's health and overall quality of life,” said Margalida Rossello yesterday, spokesperson for the Es Jonquet residents group. Other neighbours complained that being told what noise levels were going to be acceptable in what areas of the city two days before its period of public consideration is due to draw to a close is not acceptable. The City Council furthermore allowed no extra time for official complaint.
