Palma.—Queen Sofia travelled to Majorca yesterday to begin a short holiday period until 6 August, shortly after attending two ceremonies in the Palace of Zarzuela in Madrid with UNICEF Spain and Manos Unidas (United Hands).

The monarch is staying at the Marivent Palace and the presence of King Juan Carlos and the Prince and Princess of Asturias alongside their children, is also expected although the date of their arrival is yet to be confirmed.

The Royal Family has made a habit of spending their holidays in Majorca every year although in the last few years the holiday period has been considerably reduced, at a time when many citizens are questioning the role of the monarchs in the country, and with several members of the family involved in controversy.

So far the Queen has no political agenda on the island until the 6th, when alongside the King and the rest of the family, are due to host a traditional meal with the Balearic authorities in the Palace of Almudania. Prime minister Mariano Rajoy is also due in Majorca in the next few days, where he will meet with the King three days after the dinner party to discuss the country's current issues.

So far no date has been given for the arrival of the rest of the Royal Family on the island, and the Royal House has said those dates are not expected to be disclosed in advance.

Apart from the King and Queen and the Princes of Asturias, there were rumours other monarchs, Princess Elena and her sister Cristina, could also arrive in Majorca soon, although that possibility has yet to be confirmed.
