Palma.—As temperatures breached the 40ºC mark yesterday, Civil Protection placed the region of level two, orange alert for extreme temperatures over the next few days.

The general public is advised to stay away from forests and the mountains until the alert is lifted and for people to use their common sense when out and about in the countryside.

Do not leave empty bottles lying around, start BBQs or fires, throw cigarette stubs out of car windows and do not leave rubbish lying around because they could all start a fire.

The 112 emergency service also want everyone to report anything suspicious with prevention being key to this year's forest fire campaign.
