PALMA THE sale of air conditioning equipment by large concerns on Majorca fell by 28 percent in June and July due to the moderate temperatures so far this Summer.

This decrease has also affected small and medium sized businesses, which sold some 16 percent fewer air conditioners.
This was announced by the President of the sector's association, Tomas Garrido, who quoted figures from a market study done by the consultants GFK Custom Research, which also showed that the sales figures for this Summer are actually somewhat higher than during last year.

This situation is due to the fact that, although less units were sold during this period, those which were sold were of higher quality, those which make an energy saving of up to 25 percent and work silently, and of course are more expensive.

The President of the Association of Majorcan Vendors of Domestic Appliances said that, so far this season some 5'000 air conditioning units had been sold on the islands, in comparison with the 26'000 sold during 2006. This is a situation which could correct itself if it becomes hotter during what remains of July and throughout August.

The decrease applies mainly to large concerns, as the study said that there were cases of small shops which recorded similar, or slightly higher, sales in comparison to last year at the same time.

With regard to the eventual exhaustion of the demand for air conditioning because of the high amount of sales so far this decade, the President of the Association said that the GFK study said that, although there could be a “certain amount” of this factor, “there is still a lot of demand and the market is not yet saturated”, he said.

With regard to the sales of fans, Tomas Garrido also confirmed a “slight fall”, although he indicated that this was a segment which was considered “very stable” by the salespeople.
