STAFF REPORTER THE municipalities of Andratx and Calvia now have cable free internet access, a system otherwise known as “Wimax” which is operated by Balearic company Globatel.

However, Wimax is not new to the Balearics and was first introduced to the Islands about a year ago. As things stand at present, the system provides coverage to the whole of Majorca and is accessible by 90 percent of the population. Globatel said yesterday that the service is available thanks to the introduction of three new nodes which now provide cover to Andratx and Calvia. This includes the whole of the coastal perimeter from Palmanova, through Santa Ponsa, the Port of Andratx as far as Sant Elm and the south coast of the island of Dragonera.

Wimax technology is a form of data transmission which uses radio waves, capable of giving a wider broadband and a superior internet navigation speed than has hitherto been available. Wimax can reach “out of the way” places to which traditional fixed telephone cabling has failed to provide cover.

Globatel is an integral telecommunications service and new technology company which has been operating in the Balearics since 1995.
