Palma.—The Red Cross made an appeal yesterday to people living in the Balearic Islands to give financial help to those who are suffering a desperate food shortage in the Horn of Africa.

To make any donations as easy as possible, the Red Cross has set up receiver accounts in the main banks in the Balearic Islands so that there is the minimum delay in getting money sent.

According to the Red Cross, the Horn of Africa is suffering one of the worst droughts in decades. “More than 11 million people are suffering the consequences in the northeast of Kenya and in the east and south of Ethiopia and Somalia,” said a spokesman.

The Spanish Red Cross has already sent a first instalment of 100'000 euros to the emergency operations under way in the area.
