THE COUNCIL of Majorca yesterday agreed to grant a subsidy of 287'662.11 euros to a Foundation set up to help victims of drug and alcohol abuse. Associated with this Foundation, Proyecto Hombre is a scheme that aims to develop treatment programmes for drug addicts in the day centre at Arrels and in the Andana therapy unit. According to Balearic Government spokesman, Joan Flaquer, the financial backing was granted under the auspices of the Health and Consumer department which delineates subsidy levels for such projects. It acknowledges the work carried out by the Foundation and Proyecto Hombre as being of the highest quality. The day centre of Arrels aims to respond to those dependent on drugs who use the public network, and who want or need a complementary treatment that might help them in their struggle for rehabilitation. In this centre, inaugurated in December of 2002 in Palma, people who are being treated with methadone and alternative drug substitutes co-exist with others who are partaking in the programme but are not drug dependent.
