BALEARIC farmers are entitled to a share of the emergency cash aid the Spanish government made available yesterday to help areas of Spain worst hit by the year's drought. Despite yesterday's mid-summer rain, the Balearics is one of eight region which will benefit from the financial aid package approved by the government at the en of June. The aid package comes in the form of low-interest, long-term loans are farmers who have lost more than 20 percent of their crops are entitled to apply for government aid. Farmers located in areas where water resources have dropped by at least 20 percent are also in line for cash help.
The maximum loan any one farmer can apply for per farm is 25.000 euros, the minimum is 3.000 euros.
Large scale live stock farmers in the eight drought-hit regions are also entitled to apply for cash aid.
After one of the driest winters for many years, the Balearics has been on drought warning since the spring with a large number of farmers, in particular the Sa Pobla potato growers, being hit by the lack of rain and water levels in the two main reservoirs are dropping fast.
