BALEARIC President Francesc Antich, pictured, said yesterday that he was deeply concerned at the latest unemployment figures which showed that during the month of July, the construction industry shed more than 2'000 jobs. The jobless rate in the islands now stands at just over eight percent.

Francesc Antich said that it would be difficult for the tourist industry to absorb the jobs which had been lost in the construction industry. However, he said that the tourist industry could help local builders, especially during the winter period, by giving building contracts to local companies.

The Balearic leader said that he would be holding talks with the trade unions to discuss unemployment in the Balearics. Meanwhile, the opposition Partido Popular, slammed the Balearic government for not doing enough to tackle the economic slowdown.

The Partido Popular accused Antich and his team of doing “too little, too late.” The construction industry on the island has been severely hit by the economic slowdown and some of the leading local building companies are having severe economic problems.

Antich has announced a series of measures in an effort to revive the local economy. However, experts say that the local building industry will enter recession by the end of this year.

After tourism, the building industry is one of the biggest employers on the island.
