By Humphrey Carter TEN days after Palma's main food wholesale park Mercapalma was hit by fire and three warehouses destroyed, a blaze ripped through a carpenters' workshop on the Son Castello industrial estate yesterday morning causing widespread damage.

The alarm was raised just before 7am when an explosion was reported to the 112 emergency centre by workers in neighbouring businesses.
The fire brigade, whose main fire station is on the same industrial estate, was at the scene within minutes and fire fighters had to smash their way into the blazing warehouse in Calle 16 de Julio because it was still closed.

The fire was brought under control in under an hour but the flames also caused minor damage to the neighbouring business, one of which, a paint store, was hit by the fire on the industrial estate just ten months ago. Nine fire engines and 26 fire fighters were involved in the operation with support from the municipal water board which deployed a water tanker to the scene in case there were problems with supply and pressure such as those encountered at Mercapalma.

The owners of the carpentry workshop were devastated when they saw the scene and the damage caused to their livelihood.
This was the third serious industrial fire in Majorca this year and five warehouses, and businesses, have been destroyed.
Fortunately, the business had not opened for the day and nobody was injured in the blaze.
The exact time the fire started remains unknown and the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed, hence the reason why accident investigators remained at the scene yesterday.
