PALMA
THE Balearic President, Francesc Antich, yesterday defended his decision to set up a consortium to manage Palma airport.
Antich's idea is to involve the main local government, institutions and different organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Confederation of Balearic Business instead of privatising the airport. Antich yesterday held a meeting with the President of the Majorcan Economic Circle, Alexandre Forcades, and both agreed that while Palma may take a while to reach the all important 30 million passenger target, “the airport is one of the most important in Spain handling 12 million tourists per year.” Antich said that the airport is vital for the future of the Balearics and that the local government and business community “has to play a role in looking after the region's future.” Antich said that much ground has already been covered with regards to creating a management consortium over recent years and it is the preferred option of the local business community.
