STAFF REPORTER THE Balearic Ports Authority has installed closed circuit cameras and “authorised access only” gates along jetties in the Port of Pollensa following complaints by users about lax security.

Other measures have been taken by the Ports Authority to upgrade safety along the jetties, including the installation of an emergency staircase, the setting up of points where life belts are available to be used if someone is in difficulties in the water as well as the provision of fire extinguishers.

Manuel Patiño, vice-president of the Ports Authority which reports to the regional ministry for the Environment, said yesterday: “We wanted to upgrade not just security to keep an eye on any wrong-doing in the port, but also the level of safety for users along the jetties in the event of an emergency.” He explained that although the access gates can currently only be opened by key, the Authority is working towards a system where authorised users can have access through a swipe card which automatically identifies the holder.
