STAFF REPORTER TOURISTS are complaining that in the height of the holiday season in the Balearics, there just aren't enough hire cars to meet demand, said Pedro Iriondo, the president of the regional travel agents' association (Aviba) yesterday.

Because forecasts for the number of visitors coming to the Balearics had plummeted this year as a result of the recession, car hire companies had ordered 25 percent less vehicles to accommodate potential customers but right now the businesses find that demand is exceeding supply.

Meanwhile however, the National Vehicle Sales Association (Ganvam) reported yesterday that purchases made by Balearic car hire companies in the first half of the year were in fact 70.2 percent down on what it had been during the same period in 2008.

Miguel Angel Saavedra, spokesman for the National Vehicle Hire Federation (Feneval) was emphatic yesterday: “There aren't cars for hire to be found anywhere.” A spokesman for the Balearic Business Association (CAEB) echoed the claim, saying that there are currently 32'000 cars out on hire. .
