TRAGEDY struck again on the Balearic roads, when one person died and 14 people were injured in three traffic accidents, two in Majorca and one in Minorca. The worst accident occurred in Minorca at about 8pm on Friday, when two vehicles were involved in a head on collision on the road between Es Plans d'Alaior and Es Migjorn. Driver Andreu Moll, 23, had to be cut free from the wreckage by firemen and he died in the ambulance which was rushing him to hospital.
The other vehicle was occupied by a British family, which has not been named. The woman driver collapsed with shock and is recovering in hospital. The youngest of her three children, aged eight, is in a critical condition and despite emergency surgery doctors fear for his life. The other children, aged 14 and 11, are under observation. Seven people were injured, four of them seriously, in an accident which occurred at 1.20am on the road from Inca to Alcudia, just outside Sa Pobla.
Two vehicles were involved and one of the occupants had to be cut free by firemen. One of the victims is in critical condition, and two women, aged 26 and 25, and a man aged 50 are seriously injured. The other three occupants of the car suffered minor injuries. They were taken to hospitals in Palma and Alcudia.
The third accident occurred shortly before noon and involved a car and a motorcycle, according to the emergency services.
Three people were injured, although not seriously. They were treated at the scene of the accident and then taken to Manacor hospital.
The death toll now stands at 64, plus three people who died of injuries a few days after the accident.
