Palma.—The armed forces recently assigned to Local Police headquarters in the Playa de Palma swooped on one of the main gangs of pickpockets operating in the resort of Arenal in the early hours of yesterday morning and along with five others, arrested its leader. All the members of this particular gang are Romanian and were officially handed over to National Police authorities later yesterday morning.

The police raid on Sunday was part of a wider operation to crack down on crime in one of the island's key tourist resorts. “In disguise” Some members of the night patrol and Crime Prevention units in civilian clothing kept watch for several hours early Sunday morning on a particular area between beach points 5 and 6 along the Playa de Palma. Their observations and security camera images were registered by a special operations team. When there was sufficient evidence that the gang were engaging in criminal activity, the order was given for uniformed police officers to intervene.

It was an important victory for the armed forces that one of the most active gang leaders in the resort was captured. Wallets, mobile telephones and cash were just some of the items retrieved during the police raid.

National Police officers were present during the raid and offered their local counterparts all the assistance necessary.
Reporting on the raid after the arrests had been made, a police spokesman said that one of the card sharps who had been caught in the act had taken out a stone that he had been keeping inside his shirt and struck a Crime Prevention unit officer on the head, causing a severe wound.
