Calvia.—A 20-year-old Irish holiday maker was in hospital yesterday after having fallen from the balcony of the apartment he and some friends were renting in Santa Ponsa.

The young man and his friends had only been on the island a few hours but, according to eyewitnesses, had enough time to hit the clubs and bars and had clearly drunk a lot on returning to his ninth floor apartment earlier than the rest of the group.

According to the police and emergency service, at 00.30 he went out onto the balcony and apparently began hanging from the railings. However, he could not hang on for long and fell. Fortunately, due to the “stepped” design of the building, he fell through an awning on the eighth floor and his fall was finally broken by a seventh floor balcony.

The young man suffered multiple injuries but none of them were said to have been serious yesterday as he remained in Son Espases.
