PALMA
PALMA taxi drivers staged another two-hour stoppage for the second consecutive day yesterday but later announced that they will call a halt to lightning industrial action after Palma City Council pledged to deploy Local Police and inspectors to the taxi ranks in an attempt to bring an end to the conflict.

The dispute has been over the alleged abuse of new regulations by non-Palma taxi drivers who have been given a special rank to pick up only pre-booked clients whose bookings also have to be logged with the airport taxi main office.

However, according to angry Palma cabbies, non-Palma taxi drivers are picking up clients when they drop off at the airport, breaking the agreement reached this year and providing illegal and unfair competition. As from today, the police will be patrolling the ranks.
