STAFF REPORTER THE Guardia Civil are investigating a series of fires in Andratx which they believe have been started deliberately. At yet another incident at 5am yesterday morning, Emergency Services were called to Calle Gaspar Pujol in Andratx at its junction with Calle Menendez Pelayo where a car was in flames.

When Local Police and Guardia Civil officers arrived, the blaze had got such a hold that it proved impossible to put out the flames with ordinary extinguishers, so a decision was taken to evacuate the building in front of which the car was parked. There were a number of children in the property who were quickly led to safety.

It was not until the arrival of the Majorcan Fire Service that the fire was finally put out. Meanwhile, between 30 and 40 people had gathered out on the streets, alarmed by the general commotion and explosions caused by the fire.

Police were forced to cut off access to the area until the blaze was well under control.
Once the fire officers had completed their work, an investigating team from Palmanova in Calvia made their way to Andratx to carry out exhaustive research into what could possibly have sparked the blaze. An initial assessment of the incident suggests that the fire was started intentionally.
