Palma.—The Balearics is the region in Spain with “greatest economical strenght” according to a government report published this week.
The employment market on the islands is the most dynamic showing signs of creating genuine job openings and a reduction in unemployment figures. Tourism figures are said to be helping the most with the number of hotels and apartments booked thanks to foreign tourists demonstrating that, as well as the number of visitors seen in local ports and airports. Joana Perello from the Economy and Statistics department said tourism was a major help “since the beginning of the high season, when tourism levels reached historic numbers”. Small businesses have also shown signs of recovery making the Balearics the only region where profits were registered in that sector. Perello added that on the other hand the construction industry has suffered the most and keeps delaying its recovery. Jobs in the trade are scarce and the decrease in property prices does not seem to be helping so far.
