Deya.—Majorcan Socialists (PSM) and Green Party (Verds) representatives said yesterday that there was real evidence that waste collection in the municipality was far from acceptable.

The coalition said that poor waste management is particularly noticeable at weekends when bins are full to overflowing with bags and bottles piling up at the side.

Visitors
Coalition spokesman Luis Apesteguía said that during the summer, visitors descend on Deya in droves so the council needs to make a concerted effort to keep abreast of areas that need to be cleared.

Apesteguía claimed that the situation had become particularly alarming in Cala Deya due to the large number of tourists that flock to that part of the coastline. “There's rubbish all over the place at weekends,” he said.

The independent “DEIA” party said at a recent council meeting that it had flagged up the issue on more than one occasion with the town hall, and that there was an urgent need for action. The last time on which the matter was raised was at a full plenary session of the council held on April 8th. “It was at that meeting that the Mayor promised to increase the frequency of rubbish collection, but it is clear he failed to do so,” said a DEIA spokesman. He urged Partido Popular Mayor Jaume Crespi to act “immediately” and hold a meeting with the Environment department.
