Palma.—The animal rights group AnimaNaturalis yesterday slammed the decision taken by the Balearic government, the Council of Majorca and three affected councils to allow the “mass cull” of mountain goats in areas of the Serra Tramuntana mountain range which were hit by the recent forest fire in order to help the reforestation project.

Spokesperson for AnimaNaturalis, Vanesa Moreno, said yesterday that a petition has been launched to enable the general public to express their opposition to the move. “It does not make sense that they think they can save flora and fauna b y killing animals,” she said. “It's a total contradiction and pure hypocrisy on behalf of the authorities involved,” she added. “Are the goats to blame for the fire? No, part of the problem were the cuts to the forest fire protection and prevention services by the government,” she said.

AnimaNaturalis said that the current decision is “totally unacceptable” and has called on the government to come up with an alternative solution to the “extermination of wild animals.” Hence why the organisation has launched the campaign.
