STAFF REPORTER FIGURES for the Services industry in the Balearics were down by 12.1 percent in June this year in comparison with the same month in 2008. The decline was not, however, as great as the national average for June which had slumped by -14.1 percent in 12 months.

However, according to a National Institute of Statistics (INE) report issued yesterday, employment in the Services industry in the Balearics was down by 7.7 percent in June this year in comparison with 12 months ago, whereas the average decline across Spain was only -6.7 percent.

So far this year in the Balearics, business in the Service industry has fallen by 16.6 percent and employment levels within it dropped by 6.5 percent.
At a national level, there were losses sustained in all sectors during June this year with Commerce registering the most significant year-on-year downturn of all at -15.7 percent, followed by Transport (-12.8%), Services provided to business (-12.7%), Tourism (-10%), and Information Technology (-7.8%). Setting aside the calendar framework, all sectors experienced a downward spiral in activity with the exception of Tourism.
