SANTANYI AN illegal rubbish dump close to the Mondragó nature reserve in Santanyi where waste of all kinds has been accumulating over the year, has prompted a local Majorcan Unionist (UM) Councillor Gabriel Vidal to claim the practice of fly tipping can be seen “along the majority of roads in the municipality” .

Vidal said that the dump close to Mondragó has been used to get rid of building site and garden waste, old household electrical goods and terrace furniture. He claimed that ten months after an initial legal complaint was made about it, the dump remains the same “if not worse.” He said that the Council's Environment department has done “absolutely nothing about it.” The Town Council, however, said that the management of large volume urban waste is the responsibility of the Environment department of the Council of Majorca and its counterpart in regional government. The UM party are maintaining their position and saying that the Town Council needs to find a solution to fly tipping by stopping the practice at source. Vidal claimed a second legal complaint will be made because it is not just a question of the dreadful image the dump gives to the park's visitors, but the waste material also provides a fire hazard in this high risk time of year.
