A total of 7'436 Balearic citizens were sponsoring a child at the end of 2005, according to figures published yesterday by the Intervida Foundation, which has 345'986 members throughout Spain, 4'425 more than in 2004. This organisation uses sponsorship as the main method of obtaining funds, because it is a “transparent” way of getting money and implies a commitment and continuity. Every sponsor gives 0.70 euros per day for every child sponsored, which allows the Intervida Foundation to plan its work long term.
At the same time, the sponsor establishes a link, both with the child and their surroundings, and can follow the projects being carried out so that they can see how their contribution is improving the lives of many people. Intervida offers the sponsors the opportunity of visiting the project areas, to meet and get to know the sponsored child and their family and the work being done by Intervida's teams.
Last year the Foundation started its activities in new countries, such as the Philippines and Ecuador, and opened seven new works areas.
