THE Mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer, said yesterday that the works which the council is doing in the old train station in the Plaza de España, which the Council of Majorca has ordered to be stopped as they did not have the permission of their Historic Heritage department, were authorised a month and a half ago by the Historic Centre Commission. Cirer, who made this statement during a visit to construction works at a sports centre, said that she didn't know about the irregularities which the Council of Majorca was complaining about, and said that the council had not received an order from their Historic Heritage department ordering the work to be stopped. The Mayor said that, when this order is received, the council will send the necessary documentation to prove the “legality” of the project to its Historic Heritage department. The director of the Municipal Company of Works and Projects, Gloria Penalva, explained that the disputed reforms consist of dismantling the roof of the old building to install air conditioning for the future intermodal station.
