THOUSANDS of Britons, desperate to get away from the rain and cold, have booked last minute breaks for this Bank Holiday weekend and, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) Majorca and Ibiza are the top destinations.

ABTA estimates that 1.9 million Britons, nearly a million from the South East of England, are leaving the country during the Bank Holiday weekend in what has been a bumper late booking market.

Despite the trend for the staycation and reports that UK holidaycamps have sold out this weekend, the Bank Holiday heralds another opportunity for Britons to escape from the uncertain weather conditions and many have jumped at the chance to come abroad and enjoy some sunshine.

Beach destinations are at the top of the priority list for this time of year with the Balearics, mainland Spain, Turkey, Portugal and the Greek islands the top holiday favourites, said ABTA
