THE Balearic Ports Authority, responsible for the management of 13 government-owned ports and marinas in the Islands is launching a reorganisation of its facilities, Jaume Carbonero, regional Public Works Minister said yesterday.

The improvement programme which is scheduled to cover all 13 of the public ports, said Carbonero, is to concentrate on maximising available space without damaging or infringing on natural environmental surrounds. The Minister said that the nature of services provided by the Ports Authorities will bear in mind all boat users in the islands, whether they be tourists or commercial shipping companies.

A Ports Authority task force, explained Carbonero is making an in-depth analysis of how more space and better services can be offered by the government-run ports.

Additionally, the Ports Authority which reports to the regional Ministry for the Environment said yesterday that it is awarding a contract for the design of strategic upgrades at the port of Sant Antoni de Portmany on Ibiza, the ports of Andratx and Portocolom on Majorca and Fornells on Minorca.

It is the first time, said the Minister that the government will be setting out official improvement plans for the ports using legislation approved in 2005. The perspective of the plans, said the Minister will be bearing the next 20 years of ports use in mind.
