THE King and Queen accompanied by the heir to the Spanish throne, Prince Felipe and his wife Doña Letitia, gave a farewell dinner in Palma yesterday evening for local government figures.

The occasion, which took place in the Almudaina Palace signalled the end of the annual summer holiday of the royals who, when on the island, stay at the Marivent Palace west of Palma.

Invitees included the Balearic President, Francesc Antich, Central Government Delegate, Ramon Socias, the President of the Balearic Parliament, Aina Rado, Palma's Mayor Aina Calvo and the heads of the individual Island Councils.

The King, Don Juan Carlos, arrived in Palma on 5th August to meet up with the Queen, Doña Sofía and other members of the royal household.
Although the King held two meetings during his stay on Majorca with Spanish Prime Minister, José Luís Rodriguez Zapatero, a lung operation last May has this year prevented him from taking part in sailing regattas and from the presentation of awards for the Kings Cup Sailing Challenge trophy.

The King's agenda during his stay on Majorca has included the hosting of a luncheon for the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama and her youngest daughter, Sasha.
