Palma.—The President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Salom, the Balearic Minister for Environment, Agriculture and Planning, Biel Company and the Mayor of Felanitx, Biel Tauler, were violently abused and assaulted during the local fiestas on Sunday.

As the dignitaries mingled with the local revellers, they came under attack from a small group of people who not only hurled verbal abuse but also liquids, eggs and flour.

The situation became so tense that Local Police were forced to use pepper spray to diffuse the situation and clear an exit through the crowd to escort the politicians to safety.

Government spokesperson, Rafael Bosch, yesterday condemned the “vandals” who carried out the attack which he said could have caused a serious threat to public and personal safety. “What ever one's political beliefs, politicians deserve respect and must not be treated in this manner,” Bosch added.

The Secretary General of the Partido Popular in the Balearics, Miguel Ramis said that in a democracy “politicians should not be insulted, assaulted and spat at. It's not normal behavioor. “It's also a great shame that a small minority ruined the annual fiestas for the majority who were having a good time,” he added.
