PALMA
THE entire community and council in Calvia has been shocked and deeply saddened by the death of British holiday maker Tony Charnock who lost the fight for his life on Tuesday night after suffering severe head injuries during a fight with a group of local residents in Magalluf in the early hours of last Saturday.

Yesterday, Calvia Councillor for Tourism and Foreign Affairs, Kate Mentink, described what has happened as “horrific” and, through this newspaper, sends her condolences to “all of Charnock's family.” “I gather he has two children, things like this should never, ever happen, anywhere.” Mentink said that as soon as the Guardia Civil has completed its investigation, the council will be launching its own but she revealed that the decision has already been taken to launch a major review of security and guarantee that there will be a significant shake up of security in the resorts ahead of next summer. “The results of the Guardia Civil investigation will be followed up at local and regional level but I know the Mayor is already calling for police to be given greater power to crack down on street prostitution.
