PALMA
A group of around 40 members of the Palma Local Police force are threatening to take strike action after they were laid off by Palma City Council.
The 40 interns said yesterday that the decision by the city council is apparently part of a cost cutting drive and slammed it as “a disgrace” considering the high rate of crime in the municipality.

Apparently, for the past few years, Palma's Local Police force has always included 163 interns.
34 have apparently been given full time posts while a number of others will be replaced. The remaining 40 plus are going to sacked, according to sources for the angry police officers. “PLAYA DE PALMA OUT OF CONTROL” “The Playa de Palma is pretty much out of control and crime is on the rise in many of the Palma suburbs and the last thing the council should be doing is laying police off,” the source said yesterday.

What is more, the unit which is going to be hardest hit by the cost cutting reduction in the force is the night patrol unit which is going to lose 24 officers.

As a result, the 40 plus members of the force which look set to lose their jobs by the start of November are not ruling out some kind of protest action to alert the public's attention to what is going on.

The police unions are also on the case and they took back the idea of protest action and soon.
Senior police sources yesterday claimed that Palma will not be left short of police. Officially, some failed to pass their exams while a few others failed to pass their Catalan tests.
