Palma.—Work on Palma's Congress Palace at the eastern end of the Paseo Maritimo got under way again yesterday after the Balearic government promised constructors Acciona that this month they would be getting between 10 and 30 million euros of what is owed them for work already carried out.

In theory, Palma Council's Tourism Director Alvaro Gijon said yesterday, the project will be completed by the end of 2012.

Work had ground to a halt earlier this year because the previous regional government had failed to honour its debt. When the new Partido Popular government took office in May, they arranged for funding from the Economy ministry, which, claimed Gijon visiting the site yesterday, will be paid “immediately.” However, there will still be a 20 million euro shortfall on what is ultimately owed to Acciona and the regional government doesn't yet have a repayment schedule.

He said that the previous City Council had shown bad faith by having had the money for the centre sent to it by Central Government but had used it for other ends.
