SOME 19 percent of unemployed workers in the Balearics are over 50 years old and, of these, three in every four are from the service sector, according to the Balearic Minister of Labour, Cristobal Huguet, speaking during a meeting in Palma to present the European programme Fair play for older workers. This initiative is part of a European Union project in which the Balearic Occupation Service is involved, together with the Minorcan Small and Medium Sized Businesses Association and the UGT trade union. The object of this programme is to contribute to getting unemployed people over 50 years old back to work.
The programme is taking place in Spain, the United Kingdom, Holland, Greece and Hungary.
Huguet said that the improvements in health and the low birth rate had caused a rise in the average age of active workers.
