SPECIALISTS at Son Dureta hospital in Palma and Clinica Planas reported yesterday that peaches, dried fruit, almonds, walnuts and shellfish are the most numerous causes of allergies amongst people in the Balearics. Immunologist Joan Mila explained that between 2 and 3 percent of the population are allergic to proteins in some types of food. Another worrying development said Mila, is the detection of allergy to a parasite called “anisakis” present in fish - on the increase in the Balearics. Allergies tend to appear in adults aged between 20 and 30 although they are not unknown between 30 and 40. Sometimes they disappear naturally as the body learns toleration. Others have more serious consequences.
