PALMA
PALMA airport handled a total of 15.1 million passengers during the first eight months of this year, a 7.4 percent drop in numbers compared to the same period in 2008, or according to calculations by the Spanish Airports Authority (ANEA) 1.2 million passengers less.

The figures represent a cut of 8.7 percent of the number of aircraft operations, down to 124'930 movements during the first eight months of the year. Air freight transport, meanwhile nose-dived by 22.3 percent during this period to movement of 11'341 tonnes.

In the context of the month of August alone, the number of passengers using Palma airport fell by 8.3 percent in comparison with the same month last year, down to 3.06 million. The number of aircraft operations was down to 22'483, 9.8 percent less than for the same month in 2008.

These figures claimed AENA are part of a nationwide downturn in the air travel industry, widely blamed on the current recession.
