THE Balearic Islands will be in a good position to comply with the EU Water Directive in 2015, said the Head of Studies and Planning in the General Management Department for Water Resources, Alfredo Barón. This is as long as the desalination programmes are carried out in the water reserves and if the detected problems in the coastal areas of Palma and Pollensa are corrected, he added. This law, which was established by the EU Parliament in the year 2000 and then three years later incorporated into a Spanish law, ensures that there is a community water policy which must be fulfilled by 2015 or by 2027 if the later date can be justified as necessary.
