PALMA
THE Platform Salvem La Real warned yesterday that the construction of the new hospital in the Son Espases area will bring with it the risk of flooding, as the estate has a torrente or water course passing through it, according to the General Town Plan.

During a press conference, the spokesperson for the Platform, Aina Calafat, accompanied by the specialist in traditional hydraulics, Antoni Gorrias, said that they had contacted all the unions so that they could inform their members of the risk they will be running if the new hospital is constructed in Son Espases.

Gorrias said that this is not a matter of heritage or of landscape, but of the risk which exists for people who will work and come to the hospital if this is finally chosen as the new site. “Since 1974, in the Ribas Pieras Plan and the review of the General Town Plan the Son Espases area has been known to be an area in danger of flooding”, he said.

With regard to this, Gorrias explained that on January 16 a report signed by the Municipal Industrial Engineer indicated that the “go ahead” had been given for the construction of the hospital.

The next day the director of Town Planning sent an official letter to the Hydraulic Authority in which it was stated that the estate “is crossed by a torrente and is therefore susceptible to flooding, as stated in the General Plan”, he confirmed.

However, according to Gorrias, the same day as the director of Town Planning sent his letter, the Hydraulic Authority replied, saying “there is no evidence at all that Son Espases is on the map of areas liable to flooding”.
