“THE Balearic Islands is one of the leading destinations in the processes of innovation and renovation of Spanish tourism”, confirmed the Secretary General of Tourism, Amparo Fernandez, speaking yesterday.

She made her comments during a conference about the State Plan Horizonte 2020 which took place in Palma.
The Secretary General gave a press conference during a break in the meeting.
She was accompanied by the Balearic Minister for Tourism, Francesc Buils, who said that the islands are “more prepared than ever” to develop the modern initiatives which the Spanish Government is studying together with the local and regional administrations and representatives of the sector.

Fernandez announced that in November, once the consultation and debating phase is over, his department will show the Horizonte 2020 project to the Spanish Tourism Council and the Sector Conference, in which all the regions meet, and promote the application of a plan of operation for 2008 to 2012 “to start to take this strategy forward”.

According to the Secretary General, “to continue leading the tourism market during the next few years” is the objective of the programme being prepared during days like yesterday in Palma, in which the main tourist authorities of the Balearics took part, along with executives and businesspeople, such as the President of the Iberostar Group, Miquel Fluxa, and the managing director of the RIU Group, Carmen Riu. “It is a plan which means a wide reflection and participation by all the public and private agencies to agree a common strategy which will not just maintain, but increase the economic results and benefits, especially social, of tourism in our country”, she added.

In the meeting in Palma, she explained, questions are being dealt with such as the promotion of innovation in the sector, the development of a “new generation of tourist products” which are “adapted to the profiles of different clients, the transformation of all the processes of selling”, and the social and environmental sustainability in Spain.
