PALMA PALMA'S Sont San Joan airport was one of the top destinations for low-cost flights to Spain during the height of the summer holiday season. Figures released yesterday by central government's Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce reveal that 869'879 passengers flew into the Balearics on flights operated by no-frills carriers during August.

This represents a 12 per cent year-on-year rise for the airport. Ibiza also reported a rise in the number of passengers arriving on low-cost flights during the month with 129'365 arriving during August. In total, almost 4.5 million passengers have used low-cost airlines to travel to Balearic destinations during 2008 - an increase of 14.9 per cent year-on-year. Of these, more than 3.77 million headed to Palma - 18.5 per cent of the total figure for the whole of Spain.

Most of the passengers using the budget airlines arrive from Great Britain and Germany.
