A young British driver who allegedly
knocked down and killed an Irish couple in Santa Ponsa in the early hours of Wednesday morning was released from Palma prison yesterday after paying bail set at 12'000 euros. Josefina S.W. appeared before a preliminary hearing in Palma on Thursday night after being given the all clear by a doctor.
A court spokesman said that she explained to the judge that she was changing a compact disc in her car at the time of the accident and did not apparently notice the couple crossing the road. Asked why she drove off from the scene of the accident, she told the court that she did stop and got out of the car, but on seeing the two bodies, suffered an anxiety attack and fled the scene, court sources said. However, shortly after mid-day she turned herself in to the police. The woman tested negative for alcohol but was ordered to be held in Palma prison until bail was met.
