The detection of another case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) on Minorca, brings to eleven the number of “mad cows” registered in the Balearics since the outbreak of the disease. The Islands' Ministry of Agriculture reported that the new case, a cow born in 1995, has been confirmed by a laboratory in Zaragoza, following initial detection of the disease through government safety guidelines in place at slaughterhouses. Of the 13 “mad cow” cases registered to date in the Balearics, 11 belonged to farms on Minorca and the other two to estates on Majorca.
