By Humphrey Carter THE Balearics and the opposition conservative Partido Popular were rocked by another political scandal yesterday when the ex-director of the former government's Balearic Economic Development Consortium, Antonia Ordinas, was arrested on charges of alleged misappropriation of public funds.

At least six other people, including the former governmental department boss's partner, the Soprano Isabel Rossello, were also arrested as part of “Operation Scala” which was launched yesterday morning.

Ordinas's country house in Portol was raided along with five other homes in and around Palma as well as a number of private offices after the anti-corruption prosecutor gave the National Police the order to swoop on the suspects who also face charges of alleged bribery and money laundering.

Further arrests are not being ruled out.
